How to Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on Your Accounts

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts by requiring more than just a password to log in. In addition to your password, MFA usually requires a second factor, such as a code sent to your phone, to verify your identity. This guide will show you how to set up MFA on Microsoft 365.

Step 1: Sign In to Your Microsoft 365 Account

  1. Open your web browser and go to Microsoft 365.

  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account credentials.

Step 2: Access Security Settings

  1. Once signed in, click on your profile icon in the upper-right corner of the page.

  2. Select "View Account" from the dropdown menu.

  3. On the left-hand menu, click on "Security Info."

Step 3: Add a New Sign-In Method

  1. In the "Security Info" section, click on "Add Method."

  2. A new window will appear asking you to choose a method. Select "Authenticator app" from the dropdown menu.

Step 4: Set Up the Authenticator App

  1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device from the App Store or Google Play.

  2. Open the app on your mobile device and tap "Add account."

  3. Select "Work or school account" and use the app to scan the QR code displayed on your Microsoft 365 account page.

Step 5: Verify the Setup

  1. After scanning the QR code, the Authenticator app will automatically link to your Microsoft account.

  2. You will receive a verification code on the app. Enter this code on the Microsoft 365 page to complete the setup.

  3. Once verified, MFA will be enabled for your account. Each time you log in, you will be required to provide the code from the Authenticator app in addition to your password.

Additional Tips

  • Backup your authentication methods: In case you lose access to your device, set up an alternate authentication method, such as SMS or email.
  • Use MFA for other accounts: Consider enabling MFA on all your important accounts, like Google, Facebook, and online banking, to enhance security.

By setting up MFA, you're taking a crucial step towards securing your online accounts against unauthorized access.
